Sustainability Series: PFAS Contamination in Maine Lands and Waters • Portland Public Library

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals used in manufacturing and in consumer products that have found their way into Maine soils, water, and wildlife through both industrial and agricultural processes. In recent years, the discovery of these substances in some Maine farmers’ lands and produce has created an existential threat to some farm operations and has renewed scrutiny of PFAS’s application and the extent of contamination across the state.
