AS I SIT TO WRITE THIS NOTE on the 20th anniversary of our legal founding in 2006, I cannot help but reflect on where we started and how far we’ve come. This all began as an idea, fueled by passion to make it easier for Mainers to learn about topics related to sustainability and healthy lifestyles and to empower actions that support our environment and local economies. And it quickly grew to become a regional media company with multiple channels.

Today, we publish a quarterly magazine, with two issues a year exclusively dedicated to sustainable home topics and two issues (including the one you are holding) that broaden that to healthy and sustainable lifestyle content. We produce the Green Home + Energy Show, attracting more than 1,000 attendees each year to enjoy 20 workshops, Maine’s best building science and energy vendors and an EV Expo. Last fall we launched the Green Home + Design Awards to recognize outstanding contributions in sustainable, high-performance residential design and construction in Maine. We produce a monthly webinar series called the Home + Energy Chats in which we meet with green home industry experts to discuss the latest industry trends and innovations (check out past recordings at greenmainehomes.com/home-energy-chats). And we produce two branded e-newsletters each month.

When we started in 2006, there were a handful of EVs in Maine, solar was accessible only to a few early adopters, and we were just beginning to talk about the impacts of climate change as a society (Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth film to teach people about our planet’s warming released that year). Access to natural and organic foods was primarily limited to farms and food co-ops, and finding businesses that prioritized local foods and eco-friendly products and services took some effort. We set out to change that by making it easier for Mainers to find and choose sustainable businesses and actions through education, inspiration and a little bit of joy.

It has been the honor of my life to do this work alongside the most dedicated and heartful employees, mentors, advisors, business partners and so many champions for Maine’s environment. Together, we have helped to grow Maine’s vibrant clean, green economy.

Mission-focused by design, a core part of the work we do is partnering with and supporting Maine’s nonprofit organizations. From cash and in-kind donations—totaling nearly $150,000 to date—to amplifying their efforts through our media channels, we are grateful to support the vital work that they do.

There is more to be done, and we look forward to continuing on this path long into the future!
